I had all these grand plans of exercising and then. . .nope. Didn't happen. After having my other kids I had to lay off the exercising because every time I didn't I lost my milk. This baby doesn't know what a bottle is and refuses to become familiar with one. I don't really have much of a choice here and I don't want to risk losing my milk when he isn't ready to be off.
So, I sold the recumbent stationary bike. I wasn't using it and I wouldn't be using it until after we move from here and I really don't want to take it with us (I'd rather have an upright bike anyway).
However, I have joined a Biggest Loser contest with some girls in my ward and now that I have $20 on the line and there's a competition going, I'm going to try harder to eat better (stop when I'm not hungry, not when I'm bursting) and get more regular exercise like walking and pilates.
I"m really excited about this and hope that it works out. We'll see how it goes!
There is so much life to be lived, so many mountains to climb, so many joys to experience. Come with us as we release our imprisoned best selves and discover all we've been missing.

A Hike With a View
This is another repost from my personal blog. I did another hike post today as well.
Up the street from the high school, by the town water tanks, is a little park with a pavalion for picnics and get togethers. I didn't even know the pavalion was there until last week, so I am not sure how long it has been there. But then I don't go to this particular park very often. In fact, I think Ethan was a baby the last time I actually got out of my car and wasn't just dropping a child off for an activity. And that time it was winter and we were sledding.
Anyway, this park also it the trail head for some hikes in the foothills around town. A couple weeks ago Brandi's Activity day leader handed me the schedule for the summer activity days. 1 a month for the next 3 months. The first one was a mother/daughter hike up to the water fall just above this park. It was scheduled for a Thursday evening. My first thought, I am sorry to say, was that I was glad it was a Thursday because Brandi has soccer practice at the exact time of the hike so I wouldn't have to go.
Well, when Brandi saw the schedule she asked if she could skip soccer just this one time. Pleeeaaseee?
Ok, it was a mother/daughter thing, and a church thing and who am I to tell her that soccer is more important than mother/daughter stuff, or church stuff? And besides, she has been meeting with her trainer, and had that extra 5 hours last week at Velocity training, and gone to every single practice since she started. So it was agreed that we would go.
And wouldn't you know it, that day turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far- almost 100*. Have I ever told you that I don't do well in the heat? Well I don't. I wilt and get physically ill. Not a pretty site. But I drank a lot of water that day and borrowed a camel back from the kids' dad and Brandi took Jess's and we set out at the appointed time. Somehow we were still about 10 minutes late. Don't know how that happened because it isn't that far from our house. But the rest of the group had gone on already. So that left Brandi and me along with 2 other moms and daughters that pulled up at the same time.
So I have never been up to the falls. The kids have all been, but for one reason or another, I have never made the trip with them so I had no idea what kind of hike this was going to be. Easy and gradual strolling? Steep and hard almost rock climbing? Wide walking and talking trail? Narrow, hang on for dear life goat path? I had no idea. So I asked the kids how they thought I would do.
Jess said I would be able to do it, it was a fairly easy hike. I asked Ethan if I needed to wear pants so I wouldn't get scratched on tree limbs etc. or would my capris be ok. He told me that capris would be fine because it was a wide path. "In fact they take vehicles up it mom, so it is pretty wide and easy."
So I am thinking we have an easy and gradual strolling walk and why have I not ever gone before. And those of you that have been up there can quit laughing now.
Dirt path, yes wide enough for a vehicle, but it is not a smooth path, it is full of rocks and gravel and tree roots. And it is not gradual. And within the first few yards I knew it was not going to be as easy as the preprogrammed workouts on the treadmill- even with the highest incline setting.
I had Brandi take a picture of me before we left, just as proof that I actually made it up there.
This is headed back down. Brandi put on Jess's hoodie because it was kinda chilly down in the shadows next to the falls

I felt old and broken. And poor Brandi kept going ahead and then stopping and coming back for me, asking if I was alright and trying to stay with me. Then I heard water cascading over rocks. And then this came into my view.
And I was hoping we were there and that the hike wasn't really that bad, just needed to do it a few more times so I could keep up with Brandi. Then we got this close and I realized that it was not the water fall but just a mini fall of water. And the trail in front of me only got steeper and narrower. I used taking this picture as an excuse to stop and really catch my breath and give myself a little pep talk along the lines of those that Jillian Micheals give people on The Biggest Loser.
It is about here that the trail is no longer accessable by vehicle. By this time the other two moms were so far ahead that I could no longer hear them walking. But every time I wanted to say, "I can't" I thought of Jillian saying "What do you mean can't? Don't you ever say those words to me" and I took one more step- just to that tree, just to that bend, just to that little flat place... And Brandi never got mad or impatient, just kept encourging me on. Until
Brandi had fun playing with the other girls in the water while I sat on a rock and chatted with the other moms.
Of course going down was much easier, and faster, than going up. I also decided that it was pathetic that the hike up was so hard for me. I am not sure how far it is from the trail head to the falls. My pedometer said it was 2 miles round trip,(but the same pedometer said it was only 1 step from my laundry room to my living room when it is across the room, up a flight of stairs and down a short hall). Trevor said he thought it was a mile up. There is a little sign at the trail head giving the distance to 3 places, but since there is no sign at the falls, I have no idea if they are one of those places or not.
So back to it being pathetic that it was so hard, I decided that this summer is not going to pass by without me conquering this trail. I am going to hike until I can do it without soundng like the big bad wolf. But I am going to do it in the early morning hours when it is not so hot.
In fact, the girls and I went yesterday morning and it wasn't as hard as last Thursday. My biggest problem was my ankle where I tore all those tendons and ligaments when I broke my foot. But they will only get stronger, right?
This is headed back down. Brandi put on Jess's hoodie because it was kinda chilly down in the shadows next to the fallsThis is the trail that branches off of the main trail
and goes down to the falls.
So the plan is to hike up to the falls every Monday and Friday morning. On Wednesday we are going to hike a different trail that Jess found the other day. Tuesday and Thursday I will continue strength training. And at the end of summer I will take that hike and maybe Brandi will have to hurry to catch up with me.
On a totally unrelated note, just after you get back on th main trail after coming up from the falls, this is the view
See that red building? The tannish builing right in front of it is where I used to work.

Dipping My Toe into Real Life ...
Well, it's been an interesting month, and that's about all I can say. I've become acquainted with muscles and bones I didn't know existed. I've taken pills for pain in said muscles and bones. I've been reminded of my mortality, and reminded that it's all in God's hands.
I'm now almost completely better. I can feel myself returning to the land of the living. Twice last week, I had to park about two blocks from my destination, and walked the remaining distance, and didn't suffer for it. I'm not forgetting as much, and I seem to be able to put sentences together better when I talk. Believe me, I'm so, so grateful.
I've been eating two nice big salads a day ever since I posted my plan, and my bread intake has gone down a lot. I've had fast food just once since then, with a few other minor diversions. I did eat some Easter candy, but not as much as I have eaten in the past. My Coke consumption has dropped, and while I know I still have a very long ways to go, I'm feeling good about the progress I have made.
Tomorrow I dip my toe even further into real life and attempt gentle aerobics. I say "attempt" because I realize it might not go well and I'm not going to push myself. But I think I can do it. In another week or so, I might even be back to full speed. The human body is amazing in its ability to heal. I have no doubt that it will be some months before I'm totally pain-free, but I'm nearly functional again, and that's fantastic.
I'll let you know how it goes with the aerobics tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm really enjoying Kraft's fat-free honey dijon dressing. I think that's my favorite out of the dressings I picked up last week.

Good Reasons
So. . . I've been MIA for a while, I know. There's a good reason for that. I've been avoiding you all because I'm up almost ten pounds. But there's a good reason for that, too. I'm expecting baby #4 in October.
So now the goal is to not balloon out like I did with the other three and gain too much weight.
I would like to copy Tristi's goal of salad for lunch and dinner. I don't think I can do the dinner though. I could do the lunch, but every night I have to show my kids how to eat their food. That kind of requires me to eat the same thing they are having. My kids hate to eat--they'd much rather run around the dinner table while singing and dropping their food to the floor.
I will still try to exercise as often as possible, which isn't much. But now that it's warmer outside I'm going to try to incorporate walks into our days.
Goal #1: Eat a salad every day for lunch
Goal #2: Go for walks with the kids every week
Goal #3: Don't balloon out and gain 60 pounds with this pregnancy

Weight Loss? What's That?
Okay so here I am checking in. Not much to tell you because first off I haven't done very much. I've been kicking along this past week being good sometimes, being a little bad sometimes, and my weight hasn't changed at all. I think that 176 was a fluke because the day before and the day after I was 178 and have not changed. The one good thing I have to report is I am now on day 15 of my push up challenge. My arms are starting to feel it. I keep getting worried that I will have to split my push ups in half, because each day I feel like the last one for that day is going to kill me, but then the next day comes and I am able to do just one more. Unfortunately that is the only exercise I have been regular at. I still do squats while brushing teeth and doing the dishes, and leg lifts while I am doing homework, but no cardio. I need to get started on that so I can be in good enough shape for when I go to Germany. I don't want to be hiking and huffing and puffing at the same time. 57 days to go, guess I better get started! So here is to another week. I have a New Moon Party to go to on Saturday so that will be my treat night. I think it is easier if I know which night I am going to want to cheat so that I can be especially good the rest of the nights in the week.

Today Show Segment
I was watching the Today Show this morning and saw a segment about S.O.S dieting dilemmas. I thought I'd share the video for everyone. The part that I listened the best to was at about 1:40. It was a question about "how to not feel hungry right after I've finished eating?"
I like how they explained to seperate yourself from the meal and get yourself involved in something else. It's one of those things that is simple and make sense, but it takes awhile to really understand.
Anyway, here is the link if you are wanting to see it.
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/35777923#35777923 .
As for me, I think I've lost a pound. Hard to tell with water weight. But earlier last week the scale was around 197-198. Yesterday it was 195. Now I just need to keep it up. That's the hard part.
UPDATE: I just danced around for 20 mins. Yay! That counts as exercise. And the last 10 mins I had to dance with the 20 pound baby or she could have a fit on the floor. So hopefully that made it even more beneficial.
Put on happy upbeat music and dance. Whatever makes works.

Push Ups Again
So I failed horribly at my February Push Up Challenge. I think I did two days. I was so embarrassed that I didn't ask anyone else if they did it. Did you? Good for you. As for me. I took March to restart and so I am up to 8 push ups as of yesterday. My arms are starting to feel it. So I hope to continue. Oh and I lost another pound so I am at 176! So In addition to water this week I am pushing it up, at least just a little. Hopefully those flabby arms will be waving Goodbye sooner than later!

What have I got myself into??
So, I hired a personal trainer last week. I'm only meeting with her twice a month because it's pretty expensive. But she'll be outlining a program for me to follow the rest of the time with specific workouts and stuff. The other thing about this deal is that she'll have access to check everything I'm eating every day. *Gulp* - It's really kept me on track this week and I've already lost 5 pounds!
The way I'm tracking my food is with an iPhone app called LiveStrong. You record all your food intake and exercise and it calculates up how many calories you are over or under your budget. I'm not a big believer in the calorie-in / calorie-out mindset - I think there are a lot of other factors that go into it. But regardless, keeping track of it and knowing you're going to have to record everything you eat keeps me eating less, and especially eating less JUNK. So it's still very helpful.
It links up with an online account on The Daily Plate, which you can use separately if you don't have an iPhone, but the phone is what makes it convenient to record every meal. And my trainer has access to my account. It's one thing to record your eating, but it's another thing entirely to record it knowing someone else is going to look you in the eye afterward.
I haven't been doing well on the Leptin diet. I want to give it another go, because I think there might really be something to it. But for now, I'm content with just eating well and exercising. With the trainer to push me and to design my program for me and show me what to do, I'm really confident that I'll see some good results over the next few months as I get ready for my triathlon.

Exercise
I finally got the exercise bike from my friend and set it up in my basement. The idea is that I can exercise and be with my kids while they play or watch a movie at the same time. It is supposed to plug in, give me more resistance, tell me my heart rate and all that, which it would, if I could find our little doohickey that turns a two prong outlet into a three. Still, without the extra resistance, I thought I was going to DIE the first time I tried it. It is a recumbent bike, which is supposed to work your glutes better.
Um, yeah. It does. As long as you can stand to do it for longer than 5 minutes. I can do a regular bike for an hour, but this thing kills. I better have some dang nice legs and butt soon.

Pushup Challenge
Back in September a friend of mine who is one of those people who has a body like Jennifer Gardner's on Alias. You know, the type of people who if I wasn't against certain clothing styles for modesty reasons, would be allowed to wear them because they could actually get away with it? You know, the yoga instructor type? Yeah that one. Well, her sons school's football team was doing this challenge and so she started it. I did great for 28 days and then life happened, but I want to try it again and if anyone wants to join please feel free.
The goal? Starting today Monday February 1st--do one push up. Tomorrow do two. Wednesday do three. You get the point you add a pushup everyday. If you can't do military go for girl ones. It took me 17 days the first time to get one full military pushup in. Don't skip ahead if it seems too easy. It gets tough quick enough.
And for those of you who really want a challenge, I am going to do this with sit ups as well. It is a great way to get in a little extra exercise in.

I did it!
Last night was my first time in a gym in about a year (and that last time was a first time in about 15 years). I decided to start off with the cycling because I love riding my bike and I didn't know where anything else was (besides the treadmills and I didn't want to look like a wimp walking on one of those nasty things). After almost half an hour on the bike I was feeling pretty good, other than the fact that my legs felt like jelly. I had gotten a bike near a wall that was one huge mirror. I tell ya, that was incentive right there. I could see the rolls as I held on to the bike and I was determined to get rid of them.
After that I spied the weight equipment. Now if there ever was a place designed to intimidate women who need to exercise, it is the weights area. There are mostly men there, and they are men who look like they've been taking steroids ( I think one I saw actually has been), and the little pictures on the equipment that is supposed to help you know what to do, doesn't actually help.
I stood by one and looked over the diagram, trying to figure it out, and finally decided just to sit down and try it. Even if I was doing it wrong, I was at least trying and getting some exercise, right? I hadn't been at it for 30 seconds when an old, but buff man came up to me kind of timidly and asked if he could help me. It was awesome. He showed me exactly what I needed to do. Then I showed him what I affectionately call, "my Relief Society Arms" and pointed out that those areas were what I wanted to firm up. He smiled and showed me 6 other machines and taught me how to use each one. He told me to do more repetitions with less weight so I could firm and lose inches rather than gain muscle and muscle weight.
It was awesome. It was honestly my first great experience with a Clevelander. Normally, people here are not friendly at all. It was really great to meet someone who could be kind to a stranger.
I look forward to going back today. I think I'm going to try out the pool. . , .

Exercise, Again
Well, I may not have much in the way of self control when it comes to eating, but I finally am joining a gym. A friend is looking to sell her membership and it's pretty cheap. So we've set it up that I can have a two week trial membership while the paperwork goes through for me to take over her membership. I start today.
Months ago I started an exercise group with a few girls as Church and when it got to Christmas time no one came because "Christmas trees and babies don't mix." This little piece of information to me was bewildering since we all had Christmas trees in our homes and we all had kids and babies in our home. Plus, we'd been sending the kids down to the basement to play while we exercised, so I don't see the problem.
Anyway, I decided to go with a gym membership. I'll let y'all know how it works out!

Ready . . . Set . . . Crawl!
Okay, so I'm not feeling overly confident in the start I've had so far on my triathlon training.
But in the past 8 days, I've done one 20-minute run, an upper body workout, and an 800-meter swim. And I've eaten a lot of sweets. Like, a really lot. But not as much as I was eating before I started, er, training.
I also found out some amazing news. The swim portion of the tri I'm signed up for is only 300 meters! Hallelujah! I can do 750 just fine, but not at anything over a snail's pace. The shorter the swim, the less behind the pack I'll be. ;o)
One good reason to train hard on the swim, though, is that your start time is determined by your swim speed. The slower I am on the swim, the closer to the back of the pack I'll be. And already starting out at the back from the beginning just doesn't sound fun. LOL!
The kids are back in school on Monday, and hopefully I'll find some small amount of willpower to get myself back on track once we're back on a schedule. Wish me luck!!

LOL!

Working Out Again
I ran on Saturday and did an upper body workout on Monday. Now, the real test is going to be whether I can get my buttox to the gym on Tuesday to swim. *gulp*
The amazing thing is that healthy food looked good to me at the store today, and junk food looked like junk. I can't say it'll last forever, but I love little moments like that when I feel like I'm making progress. :o)

Weaknesses
I'm weak. Weaker than I ever thought I was. I eat and eat and eat. And not good things either. Junk. Just junk. If breakfast doesn't start off healthy then I apparently let the rest of the day's food go to waste (waist) as well.
I also haven't been exercising. I set up an exercise group with some girls from Church. Only one comes. I had six girls tell me they were really interested and wanted to come. Only one comes. And now that it's Christmas time and we have trees up, she has decided it's not a good time to exercise because kids might touch the trees. What?
My kids know not to touch our Christmas tree, they aren't going to go up to hers and start pulling off all her ornaments. If she's worried about my tree, she shouldn't be.
So now that I have no one to exercise with, I'm not.
I had a girl offer me her gym membership and I told her I'd buy it off her. She has yet to contact the gym. I've reminded her twice. Still nothing. Maybe when she gets next month's bill she'll think to call. I think the gym has a daycare, so I could drop my kids off and not be governed by my husband's school schedule, only the kids' school schedules. That would be nice. If she'd just sell me the dang membership!

A Comedian's Take
DH and I were doing something quire rare last night - watching live TV. It was strange, after years of only watching TiVo'd programs. But we were trying out our new Black Friday Plasma Deal. :o)
And we saw a comedian who was talking about diet and exercise. He was pretty darn funny, actually. But one thing he said was that he's decided to start out slow. So he's now sleeping with ankle weights on. 'Cuz who knows? You might roll over and burn a calorie or two.
He also said that his wife called him from the driveway because she was about to leave for the health club and forgot her purse. He said, "You're calling from the DRIVEWAY? How lazy are you?" And then proceeded to ask his kid to get his mom's purse and take it outside to her. :o)
That's how I feel lately about exercise. LOL.

Exercising with FitTV
by Rebecca Talley
I've been trying to stay on South Beach. I'm on Phase 2 which allows me to add in fruits, cereal, and popcorn while still losing 1-2 lbs a week. I don't feel deprived. I actually fell off the dieting wagon last week and this week when we celebrated birthdays. I had cake last week and a brownie with ice cream this week. I weighed myself the day after I ate the brownie and was happy that I'd actually lost a pound.
I really think that the most important part of losing weight is finding a diet and exercise system that works for us. I've seen women who've done Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, and the liquid diets and while they initially lose weight, it comes right back on as soon as they start eating normal food again. I didn't want to do that and had to find something I could stick with forever. South Beach may not work for everyone, but it works for me.
I'm happy to report that I've been exercising again. I changed satellite providers (read about it here) and am thrilled that I now have FitTV which provides workouts around the clock. I even found Gilad who hosts Bodies in Motion. I worked out to this show 15 years ago, but then lost it when we moved and I'm so happy I found it again. Each segment is only 30 minutes which is completely doable for me. And I love his Iraeli accent. It's set in Hawaii so the scenery is beautiful. Sometimes, his mother even works out with him.
So my new favorite channel is FitTV and it's getting me up and exercising again. Yay!

My New November 17th Resolution
I say you don't have to wait until January 1st to make a resolution. Just make it now!
So, here's mine. I decided yesterday that I just had to get off my lazy caboose and get some more exercise in. So I made a resolution that I wouldn't sit down to read books anymore. If I'm going to read, I can walk on the treadmill while I do it.
Before, I could never do that because I thought I was wasting my exercise time if I wasn't pushing myself really hard. And you can't push yourself really hard while you're reading a book. It's just too jiggly. :o)
But then I realized that if I'm going to be sitting reading a book anyway, I may as well be walking and reading a book. So I set the treadmill nice and slow and walked 2 miles. It took me 40 minutes.
Today, I read some more - and walked another mile in 20 minutes.
I think this will accomplish more than one thing. I'll be sitting less, walking more, and possibly even reading less. You know those times you just can't put the book down because it's just too compelling. That'll push me to exercise more. And it'll also push me to put the book down and get something productive done, already.
Okay, so I've only been sticking to this new goal for about 30 hours now, but it's working so far. Wish me luck!!

How Flattering ...
Once again, I have been seriously derailed - I have a gross little old man's disease. That's right - I have gout. Doesn't that just sound terrible?
Actually, it's a build-up of uric acid in the joint, and mine is located in my right big toe. I've been hobbling around like an injured drunk for a week. I went in to my chiropractor and he put the joint back in for me (it was seriously out of alignment) but then it just wasn't getting better. I'm glad to say that after 24 hours of serious doses of flax seed oil, I'm almost better, but it was been a wild week, I tell you what. Practically no walking, walking slowly when I do, and lots of nice purple swelling.
So ... no exercising.
I've about decided there are some Stay Fat Fairies at work in the universe, seeking to keep us as unhealthy as possible.

3 REAL workouts in 3 days
I know that every little bit helps and just moving your body, going on a walk, or whatev is a great thing. But I always feel so proud of myself when I do a workout that's challenging. On Friday, I ran, and then on Saturday and Sunday, hubby and I went on bike rides. I did about 9 1/2 miles on each of those two days.
The bad thing is that in the last 3 days, I've gained weight. I had stayed pretty steady, but now all the sudden I work out and I gain. Waaah! I'm pretty sure it has to do with water retention, or that I'm building muscle, or /somethin'/. Yes??
I'm going to keep at it, though. I didn't get it in yet, but I'm going to do a weight workout today. I'm just trying to decide if I want to go to the gym or work out at home. I have all the stuff I need, and even though they have free babysitting, it's just a pain to go over there still. And I need my kids to do some serious homework tonight. They do have one machine I really need that I don't have here - the assisted pull-up machine. Love. It. Maybe I'll just do a leg workout here today, and then go to the gym tomorrow and do upper body and stuff then . . .
Decisions, decisions. :o)
